ELLEN MAKES ME SMILE Mail Art Contributions

ELLEN MAKES ME SMILE, a tribute to Ellen DeGeneres, will be the mail art/ist book documentation catalogue for a mail art project I proposed in February 2006. Twenty-three artists from fourteen countries responded with postcards, prints, paintings, and visual poetry, including Gen Dalio's collage of ELLEN made from a Katrina relief supply box.

Last week my proposal to fund the production of the artist book documentation catalogues made the first cut for the Library Fellows Program Grant from the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.

April 2, 2006: I return home after a dinner with Liza Leyla and Silvia Vainberg.
Liza is a poet from Belgium.
Silvia is from Argentina and a poet, painter, dancer, choreographer, teacher.
The 3 of us have been involved in the snake mural project, a community art project in the Cureghem area in Brussels.
I met Silvia again twice in the same week, once in the Bozar Fine Arts Center and once in my own street to which she moved to, so now we are neighbors to my own surprise and delight.

She gave me this new edition today: a book composed of 2 of her poetry editions and which was published in Argentina by an editor during a recent visit to her home country.

"The calligraphy of the spirit", which now exists also in an Italian translation.

It was after an exhibition of her paintings where I also discovered this book that our friendship started.

I translated some of her poems into Dutch, which made her say to Manuel Escobar (a common friend from Chile)

"Guido's dangerous, he knows what we say, even when we talk in Spanish"

It was with a lot of pleasure I made her remember these words today when we had coffee at her new flat in my street.

This is me but in front of Silvia's contribution to the SNAKE MURALS in Cureghem. My own mural painting was next to hers. So we worked next to each other during weeks, which was quite an experience. The photo was shot by Denyse Roos, the girl friend of Baudhuin Simon, the mail artist who committed suicide March 9, 2006. A small tribute page has been published on my blog on life in Brussels. TURTLE VISIONS 3

Christine Tarantino made this box to cover the 3d compilation of contributions to the project "Turtle Visions".

I made 3 artist books in which I reproduced the scanned contributions.

Next to the images were poems on Turtles or diary fragments.

The 3d book was lying in my flat without a destination and I decided to put it into the network again, to get more reactions and interventions on "Turtles"...

This was the start of a corresponDANCE and friendship between Christine and myself. An Internet group on artist books refused the idea of a book traveling to the "unknown" inside the network. It was this clash of ideas and mentalities that brought us closer...

Cover of the original 3d compilation, made of marbled paper, a technique that comes from Turkey and that was demonstrated to me by Alain Valet (Belgium) and by some artists in Germany whom I met in Dusseldorf during a fair on printing techniques. They were demonstrating this on the streets and I loved the magic of it...

and then put into black covers

During my travels I've always used this book

as an example how to make an artist book with

scraps and that not all artist books are the

October 12, 2005. Theresa Wolfwood and Gerd Weih are arriving in Brussels to participate at a "peace and human rights conference" organized by the Bertrand Russell Foundation inside the strange intimacy of the European Parliament.

Theresa and Gerd ask me to be present at a book launch, the result of a research on war and peace by the Quakers. This book was distributed for free to all the guests attending the reception in a room connected with the restaurant of the MP's.
Surrealism, hypocrisy or sheer schizofrenia? We thanked the reception to the leader of the British Labour Party in the EP, a convinced Blairite...
I managed to get in the Parliament despite I was not on the official guest list but I know how to handle large burocrazies, I work for one myself!

Brussels is enjoying since a week a real Indian Summertime, excellent weather for a mail art meeting between Linda Pelati (Milan Italy), Bernd and Claudia Reichert and myself.

Linda gave me this book as a present, which was a gift in fact of Thierry Renard, famous Belgian collage artist, who also lives in the capital of Belgium. Often I use the joke to Americans who never heard of Belgium: "that's the capital of Brussels" and then they say "oh yes!!!"

Okay, this surreal joke to announce you that this book by Paul De Vree is one of these historical publications you can only regret it is not republished. The title is "Poetry in Fusion; on visual, concrete and phonetic poetry" and was published by "Pages for Poetry" in Lier Belgium in 1968.
Lier was also the town where was published one of the excellent magazines that promoted concrete poetry in the sixties: LABRIS.

Mail art is (for me) more the art of communication than the communication of art. But I refuse the distinction between mail artists, artists and non artists. For me everybody is an artist. You have those who know this and those who (still) are unaware of it. That's all...

So I try to make bridges all the time between mail artists,
artists, and so-called non artists.
I think Linda is doing the same.
And this kind of 'bridge building" (though I don't see it in such terms) makes that an artist like Thierry gives a book to Linda to pass on to me.

The books has 2 parts, an essay of 45 pages followed by a bibliography (I really should try to translate this text some day, is somebody interested in publishing the essay in English?) and then the rest is a remarkable body of visual work from international artists. So I scanned a few pages to dazzle you of course and for my own personal fun.
When art is not fun anymore, stop and change of direction because like attracts like ...

ERIC BASSO Obscure Publications Chapbooks

Eric mailed me a collection of chapbooks published by Obscure in Wisconsin. The collection arrived on September 21, 2005 or what a way to start the Fall!

To introduce Mr Basso I can only say he's the perfect antidote for those Europeans who think of Americans as stupid or silly; brainwashed in this crazy perception as they are by their own media and governments.

EB is certainly one of the most stimulating creators I had the privilige to encounter during my travels on this planet. He's a real renaissance man: poet, writer of theatre plays, short fiction, novels, painter and writer of musical scores. Do I forget something? His knowledge is amazing and I can only thank David Stone for the introduction to EB in 1997.

This book and all others that follow are published by Asylum Arts in Paradise, California.

BARTHOLOMEW FAIR: EB wrote this novel in 1982 and it was published in 1999 by Asylum.

This book is a "tour de force", set in London during a heat wave, it spans several historical periods and the language is adapted to the period.

It's a book I truly admire. EB wrote in a dedication "I should have set this novel in Bruges".

Numbered and Signed edition I made in 100 copies with poems, paintings and Vispo signs. The original manuscript and art work were in an artist book I mailed as a gift to the American writer Eric Basso in 2000.

The edition was also an extra for those who contributed to the mail art project "Signs and Stones and Trees".

I remember I started working on this book because I was quite unhappy with a job situation and where I was living at that time because of the violence that was happening: Arab street gangs attacking prostitutes because they wanted the territory to sell drugs and Turks attacking houses and centers of Kurdish people.

Changed Job

I've always been a great believer in turning the negative into something positive.

I refuse to be sucked into a negative downwards energy spiral. I refuse also the "victim syndrome" attitude. If you are a victim of some unhappy circumstances or events, try change for a chance!!!

STENCIL is the latest publication of Red Fox Press, the publishing cy of Francis Van Maele, who moved from Luxemburg to Ireland, known in mail art as PHI or FAN MAIL.

He was one of the few editors of literary books and artist books in Luxemburg and we met during a book fair in Brussels a few years ago. Francis limits himself now to mail art and artist book productions, mainly collaborations with graphical artists.

Stencil is the catalogue of a mail art project he spread around in 2004 and 2005 around stencil art creations.

When I went last Friday to a debate on prostitution organized by the French Green Party in Brussels I reminded myself to make an entry on Laurent who was one of the speakers that evening.

I met d'Ursel a few years ago during an art rally and we became friends quickly. He's a writer and a complete artist. I might label him as contemporary DADA artist but I don't think he would like the label because he dislikes labels.

Together with his friend François De Coninck we did a communication art project. We appropriated a public wall and glued on that wall art posters that were the result of communication between the 3 of us. Like mail art but Laurent cannot become an active player because he cannot conceive communication with people he does not know.

Aiaiaiai Laurent! But in the meantime we have fun!

This book published by "La cinquième couche" is only one example of his artistic mind. He makes collages of book titles in fact, by using the spines of pocket books and screwing those together. He did several LIFE perfomances of the making of these art works in bookshops in Brussels and Paris.

Assembly magazines have a long tradition in mail art.

You are asked to produce an art work on a certain size and in a certain amount of copies or you can mail original art contributions in a certain number.

Often the result is great, often I'm disappointed because of the lack of committment of those who contribute. Of course this judgment is not mail art like but I often think that people could make a bigger effort (including myself) for these compilation projects, certainly if they are low in number. The result is quite cool to use an overrated expression from high school kids. (GV)

Splendid catalogue of the retrospective exhibition in Mons, Belgium in 2004.

I remember it like yesterday.

Zois and Lynn, 2 U.S. mail artists, came for the first time to Belgium to attend the festival in St Niklaas and we spend time together to discover parts of the country.

The Dotremont exhibit was like a kiss from heaven. I discovered Mons for the first time and despite I knew CD quite well (from books) I was overwhelmed by the show. The ground floor was still okay. It were the Cobra works and I had seen these before. But the upper floor, oh my my my !!!

Huge rooms full of CD's logogrammes, an ocean full of Vispo, I was litteraly drowning in them.

Zoe and Lynn confessed: "we are out of our league here". Well, I needed a diving-bell myself quite badly! (GV)

CD did similar writings in snow and ice in the Lapland region in Scandinavia and called these LOGOGLACES. Only pictures exist of these works, it's ephemeral art, close to what we know today as landscape art.

Even the logogrammes were quite ephemeral. He often realized these "on the road", while traveling, locked them in lockers at rail way stations and just left them behind.

CD also donated many of his Vispo creations to the fire, once they were done. Some movies exist as a testimony. These were shown also during the exhibition in 2004.

LUNA-PARK MAGAZINE

Oh yeah, don't get overexcited because Luna-Park was just another historical Vispo zine and produced in my home town, Brussels.

This is the second issue of April 1976 and it was a present from Robert Varlez, one of my friends in Liège, remarkable artist and editor and printer of the M25 magazine during a decade.

The list of names that collaborated to the zine dazzles me. Anyway I scanned the back cover, so you can see for yourself.

Calonne was also part of Cobra and advocated himself as an "anti-expert" (my kind of guy).

For him musical scores, litterary writing and graphics were different perspectives OF THE SAME TIME FRAME, just aspects of the same poetic project.

Time became dense and more and more vertical!

Slow down spontaneaous creations to achieve a continuous joy or cry for life, like musical notations dancing on a sheet.

Founded the Cobra movement, together with Asger Jorn the "ideological leaders" of the group.

The Logogrammes of CD always started from real sentences.

He transposed these in a free writing style on paper with astonishing results.

He explains in a Manifesto in issue 7 of the Cobra zine how he starts looking on writing in a different way almost by accident (this Manifesto has been translated and published in Xtant 4, see another entry on this blog).

Phrase from where CD started was: "on a tort d'être le gardien de but de ses moyens"

Catalogue of the exhibition organized at the Wexner Center for the Arts at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, USA.

Ray Johnson (1927-1995) started the contemporary fase of mail art when he developed the New York Correspondence School in the sixties.

This book shows the whole of Ray's artistic activities, so also his pre mail art period, Fluxus and splendid collage works. Chapters with texts by Donna De Salvo, Mason Klein, Wendy Steiner, Jonathan Weinberg, Sharla Sava, Lucy Lippard, William Wilson, Henry Martin.

Bill asked me to put books on the blog related to Ray Johnson if I had any.
This catalogue was the result of a tribute to Ray project by Anna Boschi in Italy. Like always the town of Castel San Pietro Terme signed for the realization of the documentation and the exhibition in 2002.

It was the 7th project Anna and the town did together, uniting 370 artists from 38 countries around R.J.

WASTED ANGELS

Book edition and catalogue of the Wasted Angels project, produced by the Cultural Center LES CHIROUX in Liège, Belgium in 2001.

Starting point of the project was this phrase by Jean Cocteau: "The ideal being is an angel wasted by love".

Little background info on why a cultural center invested in producing and diffusing a book.

A few years earlier a first mail art project was organized in the center but the whole collection disappeared mysteriously (I'm convinced a mail artist stole everything). The center was quite embarrassed and promised a second show and a good catalogue to "repay" for the loss of the mail art. Surreal? Yes, but let there be no mistake: Belgium invented surrealism and still is a quite surreal country. Breton never reached the ankles of Magritte (my vision, GV)

I knew Bensidon from the artistamp catalogue published by the French Postal Museum.

Since a while he diffuses a new project in which he sends you a postcard with one of his artistamps on a certain theme. The card is blank except his stamp.
He asks you to complete the card on the same theme and return it to him. Then he unites all received cards in a xerox produced booklet.

This is the one I received September 12, 2005.
The theme for this issue was "collage".

Wipe is probably the light weight champion of magazines in the world!

It is made and produced on toilet tissue paper.

Again it is a compilation project, so you have to reproduce an art work on 40 tissues and David makes the collection and returns to all participants. Quite fun to do in fact.

Size of tissue does not matter because David makes a cover that can hold all formats.

This is issue 10 and unites 20 artists from 13 countries.

FIELD STUDY INTERNATIONAL

The field reports united each year in a compilation publication by David Dellafiora are excellent, exemplary and a wonderful documentation of what's going on "in the field" today.

You only have to document one of your own field interventions and mail David 100 copies, size 21 X 14,5 cm (landscape size , leave 2 cm for binding purpose) and you get the complete collection in return the next year. Robin Crozier was one of the mail art pioneers in the UK, many of his pieces are in the mail art room at the Tate Modern in London. Wanda was one of his projects, a project on a mythical ideal woman, called Wanda. Who's Wanda? What's Wanda? What's the meaning of Wanda?

Louise Tournay's EFFUSIONS

Publication Tim Gaze made on the automatic drawings of Louise Tournay, also known as Madame LOULOU, a prominent figure of the ART BRUT movement, what Americans call "Outsider art". Her sculptures in clay are in the Outsider art museum in Lausanne, Switzerland.
She's also present in the Museum of Spontaneaous Art in Brussels because I donated some of her pieces. Louise is a good friend and lives in Liège. In her automatic drawings you see the influence of other Belgian artists: Dotremont (Cobra founder) and Henri Michaux.
I introduced Tim to Louise and this booklet edition was the result. (GV)

Another French book on mail art was published in 2002 by the Editions Alternatives in Paris. The author Renaud Siegmann had a chronicle on correspondence art in the zine "PLUMES" between 1994 and 2001.

Well connected with the network this resulted in a splendid book edition called "Mail art, art postal, art posté"

THE ARTIST NOTEBOOK PROJECT

I took a sabbat year in 1997 for traveling and studying.

How to cope with all the mail while on the road?

This question triggered me into proposing the artist notebook project. So many mail artists are into artist book making but could they contribute also very personal items like notebooks?

Yes, yes, yes.

First address for this project was Marilyn Dammann's because I was crossing thru' the USA and Canada. This resulted into an exhibition in a gallery in Calumet, Michigan and a first documentation publication which was a description of all the received books and included also some real mail!

Back in Belgium the address became my home one and the project continued to blossom.

In 2001 a big notebook exhibition happened in the German quality bookshop Lesezeichen in Brussels.

The second documentation publication was a notebook on the travels of Lavona Sherarts to Belgium.

Lavona came to give some workshops on how to make books during the exhibition.

When she returned the next year we published the diary of that trip on an Internet site.

This was fase 3 of the project.

Fase 4 resulted in the second issue of Friour Network Magazine. I had asked to mail me impressions on the world after 911 and the zine united notebook fragments, artist books, object books, long poems, Vispo and other reactions of artists in a publication I consider perhaps as my best so far. (GV)

Fase 5 was a notebook publication on my pilgrimage to the trenches and graveyeards of world war one in the Flemish part of Belgium. I'll make another entry on this later.
