ELLEN MAKES ME SMILE Mail Art Contributions

ELLEN MAKES ME SMILE, a tribute to Ellen DeGeneres, will be the mail art/ist book documentation catalogue for a mail art project I proposed in February 2006. Twenty-three artists from fourteen countries responded with postcards, prints, paintings, and visual poetry, including Gen Dalio's collage of ELLEN made from a Katrina relief supply box.
Last week my proposal to fund the production of the artist book documentation catalogues made the first cut for the Library Fellows Program Grant from the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.

SILVIA VAINBERG

April 2, 2006: I return home after a dinner with Liza Leyla and Silvia Vainberg.
Liza is a poet from Belgium.
Silvia is from Argentina and a poet, painter, dancer, choreographer, teacher.
The 3 of us have been involved in the snake mural project, a community art project in the Cureghem area in Brussels.
I met Silvia again twice in the same week, once in the Bozar Fine Arts Center and once in my own street to which she moved to, so now we are neighbors to my own surprise and delight.
She gave me this new edition today: a book composed of 2 of her poetry editions and which was published in Argentina by an editor during a recent visit to her home country.
Pages 52
Size: 14,5 X 21 cm

Bilingual edition (Spanish/ French) "The rage of the sunflower" from 1990
Pages: 66 and Size: 16 X 23,5 cm
Bilingual edition (Spanish/ French)
from 1992
Pages: 76
Size: 14,5 X 20,5 cm
Illustration of the next book:
"The calligraphy of the spirit", which now exists also in an Italian translation.
It was after an exhibition of her paintings where I also discovered this book that our friendship started.
I translated some of her poems into Dutch, which made her say to Manuel Escobar (a common friend from Chile)
"Guido's dangerous, he knows what we say, even when we talk in Spanish"
It was with a lot of pleasure I made her remember these words today when we had coffee at her new flat in my street.

Pages: 52 ; Size: 21 X 20 cm; breath taking edition from 1994
From this book:
La paz en el silencio de la
sangre decrifa su perfeccion lunar.
Ya no estoy mas en los espejos.
which was translated by me (in Dutch) as:
De vrede in de stilte
van het bloed ontcijfert de volmaakte maan.
Nu al besta ik niet langer in de spiegels.
Okay, you narrow minded linguists, here's an approach in English:
Peace inside the silence
of blood deciphers its lunar perfection.
Now already I don't exist any longer in the mirrors.

This is me but in front of Silvia's contribution to the SNAKE MURALS in Cureghem. My own mural painting was next to hers. So we worked next to each other during weeks, which was quite an experience. The photo was shot by Denyse Roos, the girl friend of Baudhuin Simon, the mail artist who committed suicide March 9, 2006. A small tribute page has been published on my blog on life in Brussels. Dedication from Silvia to me in her book
"The vertigo of celestial bodies"
I don't translate what she wrote because
1. None of your business
2. As cryptic as her own poetry
3. Just enjoy her handwriting

TURTLE VISIONS 3

Christine Tarantino made this box to cover the 3d compilation of contributions to the project "Turtle Visions".
I made 3 artist books in which I reproduced the scanned contributions.
Next to the images were poems on Turtles or diary fragments.
The 3d book was lying in my flat without a destination and I decided to put it into the network again, to get more reactions and interventions on "Turtles"...
This was the start of a corresponDANCE and friendship between Christine and myself. An Internet group on artist books refused the idea of a book traveling to the "unknown" inside the network. It was this clash of ideas and mentalities that brought us closer...

Cover of the original 3d compilation, made of marbled paper, a technique that comes from Turkey and that was demonstrated to me by Alain Valet (Belgium) and by some artists in Germany whom I met in Dusseldorf during a fair on printing techniques. They were demonstrating this on the streets and I loved the magic of it...
New added material in Turtle Visions 3
by Zois Elizabeth (USA)
who visited me with her partner Lynn
in 2004 and 2005 and whom I looking forward
to meet again in 2006 ...

New intervention by Christine, who understood Turtle's abilities to achieve peace and understanding, a slow process but belonging to an age before men existed, like all reptiles I cherish their wisdom and memory and longing and belonging ... (GV)
The original book was size: 15 X 21 cm and contained 104 pages
ISSUES IS US

Issues is us is a great set of artist books, conceived as a whole and put in a box, created by Christine Tarantino and mailed to me
The 5 books are inner connected and explore themes as:
POVERTY
MATERIALISM
PREJUDICE
ANIMAL NEGLECT
VIOLENCE

The books are all made with recycled,
found or discarded materials
and then put into black covers
Size: 16 X 11 inches
It made me return to my second trip to the US
in 1997 when Mavis Avis Fenderson donated me
an artist book made also with discarded stuff.
During my travels I've always used this book
as an example how to make an artist book with
scraps and that not all artist books are the
result of so-called "fine arts".
(GV)

It was great to see how Mavis' work (with whom I lost touch) surfaced again in the artistic and human explorations of Christine.
